Investing in the Future of Housekeeping Management: How UKHA is Developing the Next Generation of Leaders
Lycette & Associates, has always believed that exceptional housekeeping management lies at the heart of excellence in hospitality. It is the unseen craft that shapes guest experiences, defines standards, and brings a property’s identity to life.
In partnership with the UK Housekeeping Association (UKHA), we were proud to deliver The Housekeeping Scholarship – Investing in Housekeepers, an initiative designed to recognise, support and elevate the next generation of housekeeping leaders across the UK.
A Unique Opportunity for Rising Talent
In March 2026, 19 selected delegates gathered for a three-day residential course at The Grand, York, an experience valued at over £1000 per participant.
Designed specifically for Housekeeping Managers, Deputies and Supervisors, the programme focused on strengthening leadership capability, enhancing communication, and building commercial awareness, ensuring participants are equipped to lead high-performing teams in a rapidly evolving industry.
An Overwhelming Response
The response to the scholarship was exceptional. Applications were received from across the UK, each reflecting dedication, professionalism, and a genuine passion for the housekeeping profession. The selection of the final 19 delegates was both inspiring and challenging for the judging panel, with the chosen participants representing an incredibly high calibre of emerging leaders within the industry.
Inside the Programme: Three Days of Learning, Growth and Connection
Day One: Confidence, Communication and Leadership in Action
From the moment the programme began, there was a palpable sense of energy in the room. Day One focused on presentation skills, public speaking, and delivering effective training within the workplace, core leadership skills that are often overlooked, yet essential for building strong and confident teams. Through interactive learning, role play, storytelling, open discussions and shared experiences, participants were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones.
What unfolded was remarkable. Individuals who may not typically have the opportunity to present, found their voice, spoke with authority, and supported one another in a collaborative and safe environment. The room was filled with passion, curiosity, and a genuine desire to learn. Interactive learning proved to be a powerful tool, challenging thinking, building confidence, and strengthening connection across a diverse group of professionals from hotels throughout the UK.
A sincere thank you was extended to the General Managers who supported their team members in attending. Their belief in developing people was clearly reflected in the confidence and professionalism demonstrated throughout the day.
As was evident from the outset, this scholarship is about more than opportunity, it is about belief. Belief in potential, growth, and raising standards together.
Day Two: Building Financial Confidence
Day Two shifted focus to financial awareness, helping delegates better understand the numbers behind their departments. For many housekeeping professionals, this is an area that can feel less familiar, yet it is critical for effective leadership. The sessions aimed to build commercial confidence, enabling participants to make more informed decisions, manage budgets, and contribute strategically to overall hotel performance.
Day Three: Bringing It All Together
By Day Three, the transformation was clear. Delegates demonstrated increased confidence, stronger communication skills, and a deeper understanding of their role as leaders within their organisations. Perhaps most importantly, there was a strong sense of connection, participants had not only learned from the programme, but from each other, creating a network of professionals who will continue to support one another beyond the course.
What the Delegates Said
The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, highlighting both the professional and personal impact of the experience.
Many described the programme as transformative:
“I’ve just spent an incredible three days… I’ve learnt so much, met some truly inspiring people, and come away feeling motivated and full of new ideas.”
Others emphasised the practical and meaningful nature of the learning:
“Over three intensive days, the focus was on practical leadership, accountability and building confidence in our roles.”
The opportunity to connect with peers across the industry was a recurring theme:
“It was an honour to be part of the first national scholarship programme… I leave with practical tools, fresh perspective and renewed confidence.”
Several participants spoke about the emotional impact of the experience:
“Sometimes an experience leaves you not just inspired, but truly moved… I feel deeply grateful, uplifted, and proud to have been part of such a meaningful journey.”
And importantly, many highlighted the immediate value they would bring back to their teams:
“This course strengthened my skills in leadership, communication, and team motivation… I’m excited to apply these skills to improve service quality and guest experience.”
Recognising Excellence and Support
This programme would not have been possible without the strong support of UKHA, their valued sponsors, and the team at The Grand, York for hosting the scholarship.
Why does this matter?
Housekeeping is often described as the backbone of the hospitality industry, yet it is still too frequently under recognised as a professional career path. This scholarship is helping to change that.
By investing in people, the industry is:
Elevating the perception of housekeeping as a skilled and strategic discipline
Empowering individuals to lead with confidence and authenticity
Strengthening operational standards across the industry
Creating clear pathways for professional growth
Supporting the Next Generation
To continue delivering and expanding initiatives like this, The UKHA is actively seeking Associate Member sponsorship.
This is an opportunity to directly support the development of talented professionals who are shaping the future of our industry, while demonstrating a commitment to excellence, people, and progress.
Looking Ahead
The success of this inaugural scholarship programme has exceeded expectations.
The energy, engagement, and feedback from delegates have reinforced one clear message: investing in housekeeping professionals has a powerful and lasting impact.
The UKHA will continue to raise standards, build confidence, and ensure that housekeeping is recognised and celebrated as a vital leadership profession within hospitality.
